“Rukmini Kalyanam” refers to the sacred story and ritual commemorating the divine marriage of Lord Krishna and his beloved wife, Rukmini, a central event in Hindu mythology and scripture, particularly the Bhagavata Purana. The tale highlights themes of unwavering devotion and divine love, where Rukmini, a princess of Vidarbha, sends a plea to Krishna to marry her despite family opposition, and he heroically rescues her from an arranged marriage to Shishupala. The Kalyanam is celebrated by performing Vedic-style wedding ceremonies in temples to invoke blessings for auspicious marriages and harmonious relationships.
Princess Rukmini, known for her devotion, hears of Lord Krishna’s virtues and falls deeply in love with him.
Her father, Bhishmaka, and brother, Rukmi, arrange her marriage to the powerful but wicked Shishupala.
Rukmini, refusing to marry Shishupala, sends a letter to Krishna, the prince of the Yadavas, pleading for him to come and rescue her on the day of the wedding.
Lord Krishna, who also desires to marry Rukmini, arrives and skillfully defeats Shishupala and Rukmi in battle, ensuring Rukmini’s safe arrival in Dwaraka.
Krishna and Rukmini are then united in a joyous wedding, which is celebrated as the Rukmini Kalyanam.
The story symbolises the triumph of divine love and righteousness over adversity, a core tenet of Hindu culture.
